There comes a time in every girl’s life when it is considered a travesty to step outside the house without a thick dollop of lip gloss. I suppose the same can be said for boys and game consoles, but don’t take my word for it. This period is colloquially known as the tween years (from about ages 8 to 12). If you are the parent of such a child, you are probably wondering how to keep him or her entertained. What with all the new ideas and products that they are exposed to these days, there’s no knowing when their interests will shift, and how to protect them from the ones that could end up doing them harm.
One solution could be a subscription to a tween magazine. The number and variety of tween magazines on the market has greatly increased with the heightened awareness of youngsters to modern day issues. These magazines deal with a range of issues, including fashion, education, sports and arts and crafts. However, the content can be as diverse as literature, history, geography and archeology, depending on the magazine you choose. Many tween magazines also focus on the issues faced by modern day youngsters, and contain advice columns and publications that deal with peer pressure, friendship and other universal concerns that this particular age group is familiar with.
The advantage of getting a preteen interested in a tween magazine is that it will provide them with a way to interact with other kids of the same age. Submitting articles and getting responses is common in many magazines and this can open up a new world for the youngster to discuss any concerns that they might have, and maybe in the process, even make new friends. As kids cannot identify with grownups (ie: the parents) as well as they can with people their own age, they can easily find an outlet to voice their opinions through these magazines, as well as find helpful guidance and information. Those who are more interested in fashion and style will also be satisfied with the tips that these magazines offer, and boys will also find a variety of magazines that will interest them.
However, it is extremely important that you know the content of the magazine you are subscribing to. Many magazines tend to include inappropriate issues to exploit the tween psyche to their benefit, merely for the sake of profit maximization. Magazines that have articles such as “How to get a guy” or “America’s Next Teen Hottie” are the ones to avoid. These magazines do not send wholesome messages to kids, who are easily influenced by what they see and read, and instead greatly damage the younger generation’s prospects of being happy and secure with who they are. Magazines that popularize errant celebrities and have sexual content are also culprits of this issue and are heavily criticized by concerned parents.
Sticking to the good ones, there are many magazines that one can depend on to set good standards for today’s kids. Below is a list of just a few of the tween magazines published in America. You will need to contact them for distribution details.
